Cedeno Sprains Right Wrist

Share

Roger Cedeno, who has started the last 11 games in center field, is listed as day-to-day after spraining his right wrist on a checked swing in the fourth inning.

“I thought I would try one more at-bat,” Cedeno said.

He did, took a called third strike in the sixth and knew his evening was over.

Cedeno said he had suffered the same injury to the same wrist earlier in the season.

X-rays on the wrist were negative.

Right-hander Ismael Valdes, suffering from a strained left hamstring, threw off the mound Wednesday, his first such effort since he was injured July 5. Valdes, who is eligible to come off the disabled list Monday, threw at 50 to 75% of his normal velocity. He is still not able to take a full stride off the mound.

The last time the Dodgers won seven in a row on the road was 1988, which was the last season they won the World Series.

In attempting to win eight in a row, they were trying to equal a streak last accomplished in 1982.

Florida outfielder Gary Sheffield, suffering from a strained left hamstring, sat out his third game. He was enjoying a good month before going out, having hit three home runs and driven in nine in nine July games. . . . Former Angel reliever Bryan Harvey worked out for the Marlins on Wednesday. Harvey, who has 177 career saves, is trying to catch on with Florida for the second time. Harvey was in a Marlin uniform from 1993 to ’95. He was released by the Atlanta Braves last Thursday. . . . Brown’s one-hitter was the second for the Marlins this season. Alex Fernandez threw one April 10 against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. . . . TODAY’S GAME

DODGERS’ TOM CANDIOTTI (5-2, 2.67 ERA) vs. MARLINS’ AL LEITER (7-6, 5.02 ERA)

Pro Player Stadium, 4 p.m.

Radio--KABC (790), KWKW (1330)

* Update--Candiotti keeps making Fred Claire look good. It would have been understandable if Claire, the Dodger executive vice-president, had cut loose the 39-year-old Candiotti when there was no longer a spot in the starting rotation for him. Instead, Claire kept Candiotti in the bullpen in case of an emergency. When that emergency came with the loss of ace Ramon Martinez, due to a torn rotator cuff, the Dodgers had a veteran starter to plug in. In his first outing, Candiotti went seven innings in an 11-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Candiotti is 2-0 with a 2.59 ERA as a starter. Al Leiter is 2-0 against the Dodgers this season, but has a 4.76 ERA.
