Race Categories
Will someone please explain to me why people are being asked to tell Washington about their ethnic or racial background (“Panel Rejects ‘Mixed-Race’ Census Category,” July 9)? What business is it of the government what group--mixed or unmixed--I belong to? I thought we were all supposed to be treated equally.
As far as I am concerned there are no whites, blacks, Latinos, Asians or other ethnic groups in this country. There are only human beings. But as long as these human beings are thought of as being part of some distinct “racial” group there will be discrimination and division among them.
The fault, dear government, is not in our colors, but in our minds.
