Congregation Files Suit Over Ban on Worshiping in Home
An Orthodox Jewish congregation that was rebuffed in its appeal to the Los Angeles City Council for a permit to conduct services in a home in a residential neighborhood has filed a federal lawsuit against the city alleging discrimination on the basis of religion and violations of the state and U.S. constitutions.
The synagogue also contends that the city’s prohibition against its meeting for prayer in the Hancock Park neighborhood violates the Fair Housing Act because Orthodox Jews--who must walk to services on the Sabbath and holy days--cannot live in the area if there are no synagogues allowed.
Congregation Etz Chaim has been meeting in a home at Highland Avenue and 3rd Street.
