2 Students Picked for Research Program

Cheryl Marshall of Point Mugu and Kavid Udompanyanan of Newbury Park, were selected for the 1997 summertime Student Research Program of the American Heart Assn. Marshall, a senior at UC Santa Barbara, is working on molecular genetics research at Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles. Udompanyanan, a junior at UC Irvine, is conducting research at the university’s department of molecular biology and biochemistry. Each student received a $2,500 stipend for the program, which was established in 1957.

2 Area Men to Teach at Israeli Youth Camp Ted Schneider, 20, and Aaron Goldberg, 19, both Buenaventura High School graduates, were selected as counselors for the Kefiada English summer camp program in Israel. Schneider and Goldberg, and 13 others from the western United States, will spend six weeks teaching Israeli children, ages 11-14, basic English. The program’s counselors were selected through an application process.

Oxnard Teen Wins National Dance Title Melissa Webster, 17, of Oxnard brought home top honors at the U.S. Scottish Highland Dance championship in Norfolk, Va. The La Reina High School graduate, winning in the 17-and-under category, also bested competitors in the “Champion of Champions” dance-off, a competition for all first-place division winners. The tournament was held June 28-29.

AIDS Prevention Group Awards Funds The Ventura County HIV/AIDS Prevention Group awarded $69,250 for fiscal year 1997-98 to AIDS Care Inc. for outreach and prevention services. Planned Parenthood of Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo Inc. received $65,750 to provide outreach and prevention services to the Latino community, women and youth.
