From Staff and Wire Reports

Kenya’s Daniel Komen broke the eight-minute barrier in the two-mile run Saturday, setting a world mark of 7 minutes 58.61 seconds in the Hechtel Night of track in Brussels.

It cut 2.47 seconds off the mark of 8:01.08 set by Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie during the May 31 meet in Hengelo, when $1 million was offered to any runner breaking the barrier.

Komen wasn’t invited to that meet and breaking eight minutes Saturday was worth only a $50,000 bonus.
