High School Hosts Fund-Raising Fiesta

Share

Dancing horses, lasso artists, folklorico performers and a variety of singers will participate Sunday in Francis Polytechnic High School’s second annual celebration of Mexican culture.

“Tardeada,” as the afternoon event is called, will raise money for Poly seniors to take the Advanced Placement Spanish test in the spring. Students enrolled in the college-level course can receive university credit before they graduate from high school if they score well on the test. However, the $77 fee puts the test out of reach for many students, Poly officials said.

More than 300 students are enrolled in Poly’s Advanced Placement Spanish program this year. Last year, nearly 200 students took the exam and all passed, Poly officials said.

Among the performers appearing at the event will be the Rodriguez-Solis Charro Group with Dorteo Juarez, a 7-year-old lasso artist. Musical groups will include Los Hermanos Lobo and the mariachi troupe Cuicatlan. Two folklorico dance groups will also perform, and organizers will hold a sidewalk “chalk art” contest with cash prizes.

The event will run from 3 to 7 p.m. on the Poly football field, 12431 Roscoe Blvd. General admission is $6, children 12 and younger are free.
