Albert G. Mumma; Ex-Chief of Navy’s Bureau of Ships

Rear Adm. Albert G. Mumma, 91, head of the Navy’s Bureau of Ships in the 1950s during the early years of nuclear-ship building. A graduate of the Naval Academy in the Class of 1926, he was in charge of propeller research, design and production for the Navy at the start of World War II. Later, he worked with the Manhattan Project, which was charged with building the first atomic bomb; Mumma’s assignment was to ascertain what progress the Germans might be making toward the same end. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Carmen, three sons, six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. On July 15 in a nursing home in Gladwyne, Pa.
