The Vigilantes pounded out 17 hits and beat Salinas, 15-2, in a Western Baseball League game Friday at Salinas Municipal Stadium.

Right-hander Mike Smith (6-3) pitched seven strong innings, striking out six and giving up four hits and one earned run, on a fourth-inning homer by Bodie Shepherd.

Mission Viejo scored four runs in each of the first, fifth and sixth innings. In the first, Willie Mosher opened with a double. Bret Barberie hit a pitch off the end of the bat, which landed just inside the foul line behind third base, driving in Mosher.

Corey Parker lined out. Then Alan Burke walked, and Sam Taylor, who last year played for Salinas, grounded to first baseman Kraig Constantino.

Constantino was charged with an error when he threw wildly to shortstop Tony Gonzalez. Sean Drinkwater singled in Burke and Taylor. Carl Nichols then singled in Drinkwater.

Burke, who started the game fourth in the league in batting (.361), was three for four. Nichols was three for five.

Mike Trimarco (3-4), who limited the Vigilantes to two hits in a 1-0 victory July 11, took the loss.

The Vigilantes are 3-4 on this trip, 5-6 in the second half. The teams play at 5:05 p.m. today.
