POLICE BLOTTER

A reunion of the Police? Drummer Stewart Copeland has been quoted lately saying he’s all for it, which has led to reports that the venture is under discussion. There’s only one problem: No one’s asked Sting.

Miles Copeland, who manages Sting’s career and Police matters (and is Stewart’s brother), says that while Sting has never ruled it out, a reunion is not on his agenda at this time.

“He’s just finished touring and is sitting down to write his next album,” Copeland says. “I would never make predictions about the future, but I would be lying to say it’s something imminent.”

There are three Police-related projects coming soon, though, to mark the group’s 20th anniversary. Miles Copeland’s new label, Ark 21, is next month releasing an album of reggae artists doing new takes on Police songs, and an album drawn from the first recordings featuring Sting, Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers together--the 1977 sessions with the band billed as Strontium 90. It includes the first demo of their later hit “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.”

And due sometime this year is an A&M; Records anthology featuring seven of the Police’s top hits along with seven Sting solo tracks, plus a Police song remixed by Sean “Puffy” Combs, to follow up his and Faith Evans’ use of the Police’s “Every Breath You Take” in their hit “I’ll Be Missing You.” Combs is currently selecting the song he’ll use.
