FAIRFIELD--Honoring the fruit better known as a vegetable, the Tomato Festival will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and Aug. 3 along Texas Street. A farmers market will have bushels of tomatoes for sale, and there will be a tomato eating contest at 1 p.m. There will also be a ventriloquist, a magic show, music, children’s activities and crafts booths. SAN JOSE--It’s billed as the largest free jazz festival in the Western U.S. About 80 acts, including Spyro Gyra and Diane Reeves, will be featured on nine stages during the five-day TCI San Jose Jazz Festival. Activities center around Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park, at Market and San Fernando streets and nearby venues. 5-9 p.m. Aug. 6 and 7; 9 p.m.-midnight Aug. 8; and 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Aug. 9 and 10. SAN DIEGO--Exotic sights, sounds and smells will pervade the Latin American Festival, Friday-Aug. 3. There will be Latino music, folkloric dancing and artwork such as Mexican alebrijes; handmade papier-ma^che figurines; yarn art and beadwork; and Oaxacan wood carvings. GRASS VALLEY--Locals are digging out their best recipes as they gear up for the Nevada County Fair, Aug. 6-10. Besides recipe contests, there will be a barbershop quartet competition, livestock and floral displays and other exhibits. Food and crafts will be for sale. SAN FRANCISCO--For its 22nd annual juried Craft Fair, the New York-based American Craft Council has culled about 350 artisans from about 2,000 who applied nationwide. Items include silk scarves, quilts, porcelain teapots and blown-glass dinnerware. 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Aug. 8, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Aug. 9, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 10 at Fort Mason Center’s Herbst and Festival pavilions, at Buchanan Street and Marina Boulevard. $7, one day; $12, two days; children under 12 free.
