It Seems There Is Little Rest for the Weary

Third baseman Dave Hollins will not start the first game of today’s day-night doubleheader against the Cleveland Indians.

Designated hitter Tony Phillips got the day off Sunday against the Boston Red Sox, but probably will play today.

Right-hander Jason Dickson’s arm stiffness has flared up again and his next start has been moved from Wednesday to Thursday.

Wednesday’s starter is tentatively scheduled to be Darrell May, but that could change if May is needed to pitch in relief today.

The Angels are bruised and battered as they attempt to stay within striking distance of the first-place Seattle Mariners in the American League West.

“We’re tired,” Manager Terry Collins said. “I thought that [day-night] doubleheader [Friday] hurt us. The last two days [both ninth-inning losses to the Red Sox] hurt us. And that doubleheader [today] will be tough.”

Reports from Mark Langston’s first rehabilitation start at Class-A Lake Elsinore were good and he will make his second start Wednesday as scheduled. He also is expected to pitch again Monday for Lake Elsinore before an anticipated Aug. 9 start for the Angels.

* Update--The Angels play their second day-night doubleheader in four days as their 10-game trip concludes against American League Central-leading Cleveland. They are 2-4 so far on the trip. In his last 65 innings, Springer is 2-3 with a 7.20 earned-run average and has given up 17 home runs. The Angels will call up rookie Perisho from triple-A Vancouver for the second game. They have not determined who will be demoted to make room for him. It could be a pitcher, but given the fatigued state of the staff it’s more likely to be catcher Todd Greene. The Indians won two of three against Oakland after starting a 14-game homestand by losing three of four to Boston and two of three to Seattle. Terry Clark, an Angel in 1988-89, is scheduled to start Tuesday for the Indians.

* Tuesday, 4 p.m.--Chuck Finley (9-6, 4.59) vs. Clark (0-2, 5.79).

* Wednesday, 4 p.m.--Darrell May (0-0, 3.44) vs. Charles Nagy (10-6, 4.29).
