Anaheim Man Guilty of Manslaughter

A jury on Tuesday convicted a 38-year-old man of voluntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of his 19-year-old neighbor a year ago.

Andre Oliphant of Anaheim could have been convicted of first- or second-degree murder, but after several days of deliberations, the Santa Ana Superior Court panel opted for the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter, a court clerk said.

Oliphant and the victim, Alexander Guy Yorba, lived in the same apartment complex in the 1900 block of East Almont Avenue. They had been arguing when the shooting occurred July 26, 1996.

Yorba was shot once at close range, the bullet piercing his left arm and lodging in his side. He died shortly after arriving at a hospital.

Oliphant fled after the shooting but eventually turned himself in to police.

He will be sentenced Sept. 26.
