Jurors Questioned: Attorneys for Diana Haun are asking prospective jurors if they could be unbiased toward witnesses who practiced witchcraft (B1). Haun is accused of murdering Sherri Dally, the wife of Haun’s longtime lover. . . . The questions came as more than 80 Santa Barbara County residents were asked about potential biases should they be among the dozen jurors and six alternates chosen. Jurors will be bused daily from Santa Barbara to Ventura for the trial.

Over Easy: An Oxnard firm has lost its bid to open a recycling center at the site of the defunct Egg City operation near Moorpark (B5). Three county supervisors agreed with neighbors who feared that such a center would stir up dust and traffic. . . . The other two supervisors voted for the project, saying the county’s zoning rules allowed it.

Open for Business: Oxnard’s newest school--a year-round campus in the eastern portion of the city--will welcome its first group of students today. The opening comes after a group of Latino activists tried--unsuccessfully--to change the school’s name from that of former Supt. Norman R. Brekke to community activist Juan Soria. . . . Principal Anthony Zubia says the fighting is over. “The real issue is the education of the children here.”

Major League Battles: Both Thousand Oaks and Woodland Hills are out of contention for the Little League World Series. But they did not leave the road to Williamsport quietly--their participation in recent tournaments was marred by protests and accusations over the eligibility of some players (C8). . . . Why the big-time battle over a kid’s game? Perhaps it’s the payoffs, like trips to “The Tonight Show” or the White House.
