Striking Port Pilot Held After Drug Arrest

One of Los Angeles’ striking port pilots was arrested Wednesday after officers found him in a daze with a loaded revolver and about a pound of marijuana, Long Beach police said.

A Long Beach Harbor Patrol officer responding to a call about a suspicious person found Joseph Silva, 52, in a Long Beach Harbor maintenance yard Wednesday afternoon. Silva was “incoherent,” said long Beach Police Cpl. Harry Erickson.

The officer found a loaded .38-caliber revolver and two speed loaders on the passenger seat of Silva’s car and two plastic shopping bags containing marijuana on the floor, Erickson said.

Silva was booked on suspicion of felony possession of marijuana and illegal possession of a loaded weapon. He was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

Los Angeles Harbor Department spokeswoman Julia Agano said the arrest had “no implications” in the negotiations between the city and the striking pilots union.
