Wounded Driver Leads Police on 2-Hour Freeway Chase
A Lancaster man who claimed he was a CIA agent stole a spear gun from a Newport Beach dive shop and was wounded by police at the outset of a two-hour, televised chase Wednesday that ended on the westbound Foothill Freeway in Montrose, investigators said.
Gregory Cabral, 35, was in serious but stable condition at a Mission Hills hospital Wednesday night with three gunshot wounds to his head, wrist and chest, said Newport Beach Police Sgt. John Desmond. Cabral reportedly stole the $135 spear gun in Newport Beach after telling a store clerk, “I’m with the CIA and I’ll take this gun for evidence because it’s stolen.”
The pursuit started about 4 p.m. after Newport Beach officers spotted him driving a red pickup. The officers fired shots at the truck and Cabral fled, detectives said.
Cabral drove through Arcadia, Monrovia, Pasadena and La Canada before the truck stalled at about 5:10 p.m. The incident ended about an hour later when he staggered out of the pickup, bleeding.
