District Suing Church School for Back Rent
El Rancho Unified School District is suing a church school for $84,000 in back rent for a district campus the church had leased for 14 years.
Supt. Jim Waters said the district notified the Armenian Mesrobian School last year that it must vacate Pico Rivera’s Selby Grove school by the summer of 1998. However, he said the private school never confirmed that it was leaving until earlier this month, when it turned over keys to the Paramount Boulevard campus without paying rent dating back to July 1996.
The Armenian school has moved to another facility in the city. School officials could not be reached for comment, and their attorney did not return a phone call Wednesday.
Waters said the district first tried to evict the church school from Selby Grove three years ago, but failed to provide proper notice. He said the district needs the space to meet class-size reduction requirements.
