Making his 13th consecutive start, Chris Terreri stopped 24 shots--many from point-blank range--as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-1, Sunday night at Chicago for their first three-game winning streak since February.

Jeff Hackett, healthy and ready to return from an ankle injury for Chicago, can’t get his job back because of Terreri’s strong play.

“Three wins in a row, and he’s played so well, it’s not an easy decision . . . but he’s played outstanding,” Coach Craig Hartsburg said. “Obviously, Hack’s going to get his chance. But I don’t think anybody in the state of Illinois can question how well Terreri’s playing.”

Terreri has given up only four goals during the winning streak to lower his goals-against average to 2.19.

Sergei Krivokrasov, Tony Amonte and Jeff Shantz scored for Chicago, which is 5-3 since opening the season with seven losses. After scoring two or fewer goals in 11 of 12 games, the Blackhawks have 11 goals in the last three.

Andreas Johansson scored for Pittsburgh, which is 8-38-9 at Chicago since joining the NHL in 1967. Ken Wregget stopped 26 shots, but couldn’t get his 200th career victory.

Phoenix 3, Calgary 1--In a game marred because of an injury to veteran right wing Mike Gartner, Craig Janney set up three goals to lift the Coyotes over the Flames at Phoenix.

Gartner, two goals shy of becoming the fifth player in NHL history to score 700, was blindsided by Calgary’s Theoren Fleury and limped off the ice with six seconds remaining in the first period.

The Coyotes said Gartner suffered a sprained left knee and would undergo an MRI exam today to determine the extent of the injury.

Philadelphia 3, Dallas 3--Jamie Langenbrunner scored on a second-period play that injured Flyer goaltender Ron Hextall and lifted the Stars into a tie at Philadelphia.

Langenbrunner took the rebound of Bob Errey’s shot off the rear boards, spun around and wristed the puck into an open net with 1:17 left in the period.

Hextall strained his neck and back when Philadelphia’s Paul Coffey kneed him in the head as the defenseman came down after leaping to block Errey’s shot.

Hextall remained in the game, but was replaced by Garth Snow at the start of the third period. The Flyers said he will miss tonight’s game in St. Louis.

Boston 3, Ottawa 1--Rob DiMaio’s tie-breaking goal with 2:41 left gave the road-tough Bruins a victory at Ottawa.

After DiMaio broke a 1-1 tie with his third goal, Ted Donato scored an empty-net goal with 49 seconds remaining for the final margin.
