Council Backs Study of Aquatics Center
The City Council took its first plunge this week toward building an aquatics center at Ocean View High School for student and public recreational swimming.
The council unanimously approved sharing costs with the Huntington Beach Union High School District for a study into the proposal.
The city will provide $15,000 as half the cost of the study, which will include a preliminary site evaluation and projection of costs and revenue that would come from building an Olympic-size pool at the campus, 1905 Main St. The study will take three to six months to complete.
“We think we have the room at Ocean View for a facility for multiple users,” said Ron Hagan, community services director. “It would serve for competitions, swimming lessons, diving, therapy, and could be rented out for birthday parties.”
The pool would allow the city to expand recreational offerings and competitive swim meets. The city now has an agreement with Golden West College to use the campus’ 50-meter pool for competitive swimming events.
