Children can experience music in a new way during the L.A. Philharmonic’s Toyota Symphonies for Youth series. The season kicks off with preconcert activities, where children 5 to 11 can meet musicians and try out instruments. The main event happens at 11 a.m. with guest conductor Roger Norrington leading the Philharmonic and pianist Emanuel Ax performing. (This is a junior version of a full program of Chopin, Berlioz and Smetana taking place Friday, Saturday and Sunday.) Actor John Rubinstein is the host of the five-part Toyota series.

Black Theatre Artists Workshop presents “Jungle Bells,” Shabaka Barry Henley’s solo theater piece about an African American’s search for his present identity and ancestral past, at Actors’ Gang as part of the Loco Motion II festival.

The Southwest Museum’s seventh annual “Intertribal Marketplace” will feature jewelry, beadwork, baskets, pottery, kachinas, sculpture and other works by more than 100 artists from tribes throughout the country on Saturday and Sunday. Also scheduled: a pancake breakfast from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday, and on both days a Children’s Craft Fair with basket-weaving, clay works, beading and stencil rubbings; Native American and Mexican food; and traditional Native American song, dance and storytelling.

In celebration of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, Knott’s Berry Farm is offering nine days of free park admission to veterans and active military personnel and their spouses (or one guest) and dependent children under 12. The offer is good through Nov. 16. Proper proof of service must be presented. The traveling replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial “Moving Wall” will be on display adjacent to Independence Hall at no viewing charge.

Jazz pianist Billy Childs’ long-held interest in classical music and composition has resulted in a number of commissions, including “Fanfare for the United Races of America,” written in 1994 for Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. His latest commission for woodwind quintet and piano, “A Day in the Forest of Dreams,” will be performed Saturday with the Dorian Wind Quintet in a program that also includes recent works from Lee Hoiby, David Sampson and Robert Ward.

Cesaria Evora has taken the melancholy music of her Cape Verdean home to a worldwide audience, touching hearts with her delicate, mournful voice and expressive interpretations. She’ll perform from her first U.S. release, “Cabo Verde,” at this sure-to-be-soulful show.
