Roy Edges Past Vachon in Career Victories

Patrick Roy stopped 31 shots at Denver to lead the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues and earn his 356th victory, moving past Rogie Vachon into seventh place on the career win list for goaltenders.

Alexei Gusarov, Rene Corbet and Eric Lacroix scored third-period goals as the Avalanche pulled away from a 1-1 tie. The goals came five minutes apart and chased St. Louis goaltender Jamie McLennan, subbing for Grant Fuhr, who was held out with a sore left ram.

New Jersey 2, Boston 0--Martin Brodeur recorded his sixth straight win by making 17 saves to lead the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J., and end the Bruins’ six-game road winning streak.

Patrik Elias scored a first-period power-play goal to give Brodeur his second shutout of the year.

Philadelphia 4, Ottawa 3--John LeClair, Chris Gratton and Shjon Podein scored in the second period to lift the Flyers at Kanata, Ontario.

Phil Crowe and Magnus Arvedson scored for Ottawa in the third period, but the the Senators still lost for the 10th consecutive time to the Flyers.

Chicago 4, N.Y. Islanders 2--Tony Amonte scored twice and had two assists and Chris Terreri stopped 24 shots for his fifth straight win to lift the Blackhawks at Uniondale, N.Y.

The Blackhawks scored three first-period goals and then hung on to hand the Islanders their first loss in six games.

Phoenix 3, Toronto 0--Nikolai Khabibulin notched his first shutout of the season with 25 saves as the Coyotes beat the punchless Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Khabibulin had seven shutouts last year and shared the league lead with Patrick Roy. It was the second time in the last three games that the Maple Leafs had been shut out this season.

Buffalo 2, Pittsburgh 2--Curtis Brown and Alexei Zhitnik scored in the final eight minutes of the third period to give the Sabres a tie at Pittsburgh.

The Penguins had just five defenseman and when Neil Wilkinson got into a fight as the second period ended, they played the first six minutes of the third with just four defensemen.

Washington 2, Edmonton 1--Phil Housley became the second American-born player in NHL history to score 1,000 points, tallying an assist as the Capitals won at Landover, Md.

Housley reached the milestone with 4:48 elapsed in the first period with the Capitals enjoying a five-on-three advantage. The 16-year veteran got the puck from Oates and sent a touch pass from the left point to Calle Johansson, who connected on a slap shot from the right circle for a 1-0 lead.

Housley became the 48th NHL player to score 1,000 points. Joe Mullen was the only other player born in the United States to do it, and only four other defenseman have reached the figure--Dennis Potvin, Paul Coffey, Larry Murphy and Ray Borque.

San Jose 3, Tampa Bay 1--Jeff Friesen and Murray Craven each scored goals on deflections in the second period and Kelly Hrudey stopped 36 shots to lift the Sharks at San Jose.

The Sharks ended a five-game winless streak (0-4-1) while the Lightning extended their club record winless streak to 12 games (0-11-1).
