Victory Places a Sprain on New QB

USC came out of its victory over Stanford battered and bruised.

Though Coach John Robinson said he believes quarterback Mike Van Raaphorst is probably out for the rest of the year, trainers listed him as week-to-week with a high right ankle sprain, indicating he might return for the UCLA game Nov. 22.

X-rays showed no broken bones, but he will be reexamined today.

“I’m going to try to be back for Oregon State, but I’ll do whatever it takes to get back for the UCLA game,” Van Raaphorst said.

Tailback Chad Morton sat out most of the second half because of a hamstring injury, but he should be able to play next week. The prognosis is the same for cornerback Brian Kelly, who stayed on the sidelines because of a bruised left thigh.

But cornerback Ken Haslip, who took Kelly’s place, left on crutches because of a right hamstring injury and is questionable for the remaining games.

Stanford quarterback Todd Husak, a sophomore from Long Beach who played at St. John Bosco, completed 18 of 36 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns after replacing Chad Hutchinson.

“The decision was made at halftime to try to give the team a boost and possibly execute better,” Stanford Coach Tyrone Willingham said.

With his 55 yards rushing, Delon Washington passed the 2,000-yard mark for his career.

He’s only 20 yards from passing Orv Mohler for No. 10 on USC’s career rushing list.

USC’s 45 points were the most the Trojans have scored this season--and the most since a 46-17 victory over Oregon State on Sept. 14, 1996. The Trojans’ 309 rushing yards were a season high, well above the previous best of 218 yards against Oregon.

Linebacker-safety David Gibson, USC’s defensive standout in recent weeks, forced two more fumbles and now leads the team with five this season. Gibson also had a sack, broke up two passes and had four tackles for losses. . . . USC offensive tackle Phalen Pounds, who was sick most of the week, did not play. He was replaced by Rome Douglas.
