Voluntary Recycling Program Launched
About 500 residents will be hauling their aluminum cans, plastic, paper and cardboard products to the curb on Tuesdays as part of a voluntary recycling program launched by citizens to bring curbside recycling to El Segundo.
As part of the program, residents will pay Zakaroff Recycling Services, the city’s trash hauler, $6 per month to cart away their recyclables each week.
The city does not have its own recycling program because 95% of the city’s trash is produced by businesses, which have their own recycling programs.
Students from Center Street School came up with the idea for a voluntary program, which started this week, while working with Tree Musketeers, an environmental program that was started in 1987 by a group of 8-year-olds. The students have spent the last year trying to get the program started.
“This is a voluntary program so if you want to recycle you can; if you don’t, you don’t have to,” said Tree Musketeers executive director Gail Church, who hopes to sign up 1,000 subscribers by the end of the year.
