Qualcomm Inc. said it won a $200-million contract from Telesystems of Ukraine Ltd. to help build a digital wireless phone network in that country, further expanding its business in Eastern Europe. The San Diego-based maker of wireless phone equipment said it plans to set up the network with its code division multiple access digital technology, which provides clearer transmission and lower costs per subscriber. Qualcomm expects that its CDMA systems will enable Telesystems of Ukraine, a privately owned telephone service provider, to “leapfrog older technologies” in the country, Chris Simpson, senior vice president of marketing, said in a statement. Qualcomm has also set up networks in Chelyabinsk and Rostov, in Russia, and in New Delhi. Qualcomm shares rose 56 cents to close at $63.06 on Nasdaq.
