The city of Los Angeles is offering free workshops this month for residents and business owners to help them prepare for the El Nino rainstorms expected this winter.

Representatives of the police and fire, building and safety, engineering, sanitation and animal regulation departments will answer questions and offer information on a range of storm-related subjects, from sandbagging and erosion control to flood insurance and personal safety, officials said.

Residents may attend one of two workshops in the San Fernando Valley. The first will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 9501 Balboa Blvd., Northridge. The second is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the Northeast Valley Senior Center, 11300 Glenoaks Blvd., Pacoima.
