He is known as the world’s smallest adult and as the person inside the costume of television’s “Alf,” and Mihaly “Michu” Meszaros gained further recognition Wednesday when Hawthorne Mayor Larry Guidi bestowed him with the title of honorary mayor.

At 33 inches tall, the Hungarian-born circus entertainer earned his reputation for being the world’s smallest man while performing with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

Meszaros, 58, left the circus in 1985 and has since appeared on television shows and in music videos, but plans to return to the circus for the 1998 season.

City officials honored Meszaros, an 11-year Hawthorne resident, for his efforts to raise money for orphaned children in former Eastern Bloc countries.

Officials said Meszaros will be an ambassador of goodwill for the city.

“I am very happy,” Meszaros said.
