Owners Told to Clean Up Pets’ Acts at Dog Beach
Pet owners who use popular Dog Beach are forewarned that City Council members are considering a “zero tolerance” policy regarding violations of dog waste and leash regulations.
The Community Services Commission this week unanimously approved a 90-day pilot program that would fine dog owners up to $160 for not picking up animal droppings or not keeping their pets on a leash. The City Council will consider the plan Monday.
Under the program, signs, baggy dispensers and trash cans will be installed along a half-mile stretch that runs south of Golden West Street, known as Dog Beach. A park ranger would enforce the ordinance during the morning, evenings and weekends.
“This summer we noticed a large number of people were not picking up after their dogs and were not keeping them on a leash,” said Ron Hagan, director of community services. “If people do not comply with the measure we may be forced to close this popular spot.”
The pilot program is slated to begin in January and run through March.
