* STORYLINE: USC can clinch a winning regular season and qualify for a bowl bid with a victory over Oregon State, a team that hasn’t beaten the Trojans since 1967.

* OREGON STATE UPDATE: Beaver Coach Mike Riley, the former USC offensive coordinator, is still seeking a breakthrough win for the program after three-point losses to Stanford and Arizona State earlier in the season. Quarterback Tim Alexander is a versatile but inconsistent threat who also has lined up at receiver and tailback this season.

* Edge to USC: Oregon State’s margin of defeat in consecutive losses to UCLA, Washington, California and Arizona has averaged almost 23 points, but John Robinson cautions that the Beaver defense is better than people realize.

* THE LINE: USC by 11.
