Council Might Seek Review of Reform Law

Share

The City Council on Tuesday will consider hiring an independent attorney to review Anaheim’s campaign-reform law and decide if it is constitutional.

In a related action, the council will consider approving a contract with Ravi Mehta, the former chairman of the state Fair Political Practices Commission, who recently was hired by the council as an independent counsel and special prosecutor. His role is to investigate and prosecute possible violations of campaign-finance laws in past city elections.

Mehta’s proposed billing rate is $250 an hour. According to a staff report, no money has yet been budgeted for this matter.

To make potential legal deadlines, Mehta has been allowed to start his work, and he has already filed misdemeanor charges against former Councilman Frank Feldhaus and a political action committee for allegedly violating state and local campaign contribution laws.

The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in council chambers, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. Information: (714) 254-5166.
