Leaders End Ruling Body, Form New One

Leaders of the ruling State Law and Order Restoration Council, under pressure to improve human rights policies, dissolved the council but formed a new governing body. Analysts were divided on whether the formal dissolution of the military-led junta and creation of the State Peace and Development Council heralded any shift in policy. The announcement of the move said the old council was dissolved in the interests of “disciplined democracy in the country and to build up a peaceful developed nation.”
