Blazers Hit Bump in Road

Glen Rice teamed with David Wesley to fuel a third-quarter run that helped the Charlotte Hornets end Portland’s perfect road record with a 106-92 victory over the Trail Blazers on Wednesday night at Charlotte, N.C.
Rice had 10 points and Wesley added four points in the 17-5 surge that sent the Hornets to their sixth victory in seven games.
Rice wound up with 27 points and Wesley had 13 points and nine assists.
Charlotte had a 36-33 rebounding edge over the Trail Blazers, the NBA’s rebounding leaders.
“We just didn’t have a good rhythm,” said Blazer Coach Mike Dunleavy, whose team came in averaging 51 rebounds.
Seattle 107, Vancouver 87--Gary Payton scored a season-high 31 points and handed out 11 assists and Detlef Schrempf added 23 points as the SuperSonics won at Seattle.
Orlando 96, Cleveland 93--The Magic won its fourth consecutive game without injured Penny Hardaway as Derek Strong came off the bench to score 20 points at Cleveland and help Orlando erase a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter and win in overtime.
San Antonio 108, Golden State 87--David Robinson scored 21 points and Tim Duncan added 19 at San Antonio as the Spurs dealt the Warriors their ninth consecutive loss to start the season. Golden State’s 0-9 start is the worst in franchise history.
Philadelphia 97, Washington 86--Allen Iverson scored 29 points as the 76ers picked up their first home victory and first win against an Eastern Conference opponent by beating the Wizards.
New Jersey 108, Boston 100--The Celtics had their four-game winning streak ended by the Nets at East Rutherford, N.J., and Coach Rick Pitino got ejected in the third quarter with two technical fouls for venting his frustration at officials.
The Celtics had blown a 10-point lead when Pitino was ejected. “I’m disappointed with the way we responded,” he said.
Jayson Williams had 27 points and 13 rebounds for the Nets.

After the 76ers’ victory over the Wizards, team cardiologist Fred Bove announced that Derrick Coleman, who had 13 points and 12 rebounds, will be sidelined for at least two weeks because of an irregular heartbeat that will be treated with medicine. . . . Cleveland guard Bob Sura, whose erratic play cost him his starting job, was placed on the injured list with an ankle sprain that has had plagued him since preseason. . . . The Boston Celtics placed forward Bruce Bowen on the injured list with a nasal fracture and Portland placed swingman Vincent Askew on the injured list because of a sprained left ankle.
