Council Votes Against Dog Beach Proposal

Share

The City Council voted this week against spending $5,300 to enforce regulations at Dog Beach because most of the dog owners who allow their pets to roam there are not Huntington Beach residents.

“Why should the city pay for this?” asked Councilman Dave Garofalo at Monday’s council meeting.

Under a 90-day pilot program proposed by the Community Services Committee, the city would have put up signs and baggy dispensers and placed a ranger at the beach to ensure dog owners obey both leash and dog waste regulations.

City officials have complained that in the past year dog owners have allowed their pets to roam freely on that stretch of beach just south of Bolsa Chica State Beach and have not cleaned up after them.Acting City Manager Ray Silver said the city will need to devise a way to make dog owners pay for the use of the beach.
