Artists Now Allowed to Live in Studios
The City Council has adopted an ordinance to make it easier for artists to live in this affluent community by allowing painters, sculptors and others to reside in their art studios.
Artists with studio space in commercial and some industrial zones may be granted a permit to live in their workplace, under the new law. Also, artists living in high-density residential areas can work out of their homes, said Carolyn Martin, the city’s associate planner. Previous city laws allowed artists to live in studio spaces only in some industrial areas.
Council members said the ordinance would allow artists to remain in the community and encourage others to move to Laguna Beach. Officials said they did not know how many artists would take advantage of the new regulations.
