Call to Action

The Ventura County Grand Jury on Friday urged Santa Paula city officials to settle the dispute between Police Chief Walt Adair and his officers (B1). . . . The officers’ union announced earlier this week that 92% of its members have no confidence in their boss. Adair, a 30-year veteran of the force who has headed the department since 1987, says the vote simply stemmed from a labor dispute.

Lobbying Campaign

Thousand Oaks parents who fear their children may be shut out of the Conejo Valley’s newest elementary school are busy circulating petitions (B1). . . . The parents, complaining their neighborhoods around Lang Ranch Elementary School were slighted in favor of a housing development as yet unbuilt, hope to persuade school trustees to change attendance boundary lines.

Marrow Appeal

Valerie Sun, diagnosed five years ago with aplastic anemia, is one of 118 Ventura County residents in need of a bone-marrow transplant (B1). . . . But the Thousand Oaks teen faces tough odds: In part because of Valerie’s Chinese American ancestry, very few potential donors are available. She and those who support her are encouraging potential donors to step forward; even if none have tissue suitable for her, others in need may benefit, Valerie says.

Holiday Helpings

From Ojai to Oxnard, churches and social-service agencies across Ventura County are working to make sure no one misses a Thanksgiving dinner for lack of money or transportation (B10). . . . Some churches are throwing open their doors to provide food both for the stomach and the soul. Other churches and agencies are providing meals, gift baskets and even some home delivery.

Weather

Chance of showers. Highs in upper 70s. Lows to the 40s. B13
