‘RED HOLLYWOOD’

Share

After reading Kenneth Turan’s article about the Hollywood 10 (“Let’s Review the Evidence,” Nov. 16), I am reminded once again that along with writers, producers and directors, a great many actors and actresses had their careers destroyed by the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

I also think it is time that someone recognize the fact that none of the so-called “communist-inspired” films could have been made without the consent of Jack Warner, Louis B. Mayer and all the other studio heads.

Thanks for the photo of an actress who is overdue for rediscovery, Susan Hayward. However, Turan’s synopsis of her Oscar-nominated performance in “Smash-Up” (1947) is misleading, describing her as “a woman who finds out what a terrible mistake it is to give up a career for husband and family.” Her drinking problem would be better described as stemming from her inability to balance a family and her singing career without booze as a crutch.
