School Plan Stresses Basics Over Art, PE

Share

Santa Ana Unified School District trustees today could take their first formal vote on a back-to-basics curriculum plan known as Above the Mean.

Supt. Al Mijares introduced the plan earlier this year as an approach to emphasize reading, writing and math over all other subjects. Among the most radical proposals was relegating music, arts and physical education to secondary status in district schools.

Tuesday’s proposed action does not specify the elimination or reduction of such classes. Rather, each school will be asked to submit proposals on how to maximize instructional time in language arts and mathematics.
