Rabid Bats Prompt Warning by Official

Share

The discovery of a second rabid bat in Ventura’s Pierpont neighborhood last week has prompted health-care officials to caution county residents about the transmission of rabies.

Dr. Paul Russell, acting health officer for the county, warned that rabies can be transmitted by the bite of a rabid animal and through contamination of open wounds, such as scrapes or cuts.

Russell recommends people not approach or touch wild animals or pets that behave strangely, as this could result in contact with infected saliva or potentially infectious tissues. In Ventura County, skunks and bats are most likely to carry the disease.

In case of contact, people are advised to immediately wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water, then call a doctor.

To avoid exposure, never handle dead or sick animals. Anyone who must handle a bat should use thick gloves, wrap the animal in a heavy towel or use a net or container to capture it, Russell said. Always keep the bat isolated.

Authorities recommend having dogs and cats vaccinated and keeping them from roaming.
