McCann Will Accept Scholarship from UCLA

Quarterback Ryan McCann of Agoura High decided Tuesday night to accept a scholarship from UCLA.

McCann passed for 1,024 yards this season despite missing four games with a separated shoulder.

“The way the offense is going, the whole atmosphere (at UCLA) is exciting,” said McCann, who attended several Bruin home games. “I figure to sit one year and compete for the job the next year.”

In three years at Agoura, the left-handed McCann (6-foot-4, 200) passed for 4,442 yards, completed of 302 of 576 passes, had 45 touchdowns and had 23 passes intercepted.

“This year was disappointing because of the injury but it was good that we made the playoffs,” McCann said.

McCann will have competition at UCLA. Cory Paus, a high school player from New Lenox, Ill., has committed to the Bruins, and Scott McEwan of Thousand Oaks High redshirted as a freshman this year.

Wait a minute, Mr. Postman: Lancaster Bethel Christian plans to host Saturday’s Southern Section Eight-Man Large Division football championship game on campus despite a protest from opponent Santa Maria Valley Christian.

Valley Christian had challenged the site because Bethel’s field has goal posts in only one end zone. During the regular season, teams have switched ends when attempting point-after kicks and field goals.

Eagle Coach James Vondra said Bethel is working on making a second set of goal posts for Saturday’s 1 p.m. game.

“Our maintenance people say they can have another goal post ready in time,” he said. “We’re going to do whatever it takes to play this game at home.”
