A Costa Mesa woman who had stopped to buy a cup of coffee at a doughnut shop here Wednesday night was stabbed several times by a knife-wielding carjacker who attacked her when she tried to escape, authorities said.

Carol Parker, 35, suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung during the attack. She was listed in fair condition Thursday at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center,

Police said they arrested a suspect, 26-year-old Jose Briseno of Pomona, after a wild chase through three cities.

Briseno was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, carjacking and evading arrest.

A spokesman for the Pomona Police Department said the carjacking occurred about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when Parker pulled into the doughnut shop.

The assailant, who was armed with a large knife, opened Parker’s unlocked passenger door, jumped in and ordered her to drive away, Pomona Police Officer Roger Iwig said.

The attacker later switched seats with Parker but kept threatening the victim with his knife, Iwig said.

Parker tried to jump out of the car when she saw a police vehicle stopped near an intersection, Iwig said.

Even though the man stabbed her three times, she managed to get out and ran to the patrol car, the spokesman said.

Briseno was arrested after he allegedly led a fleet of police cars and an Ontario police helicopter on a high-speed chase. The pursuit ended in Chino after Briseno crashed into a curb, disabling Parker’s vehicle, police said.
