Bailey Bruised Physically, Too

Share

Toby Bailey, who has not missed a game in his 97-game Bruin career, suffered bruises to his left shoulder and lower back that could force him to sit out this afternoon’s game against Alaska Anchorage.

Bailey said he was elbowed underneath the basket late during UCLA’s loss to North Carolina on Thursday night, and was very sore after the game.

“I don’t know if I can go,” Bailey said.

Bailey has had to chip in in the low post, especially on defense, as the Bruins struggle with a very small lineup.

“It may get worse before it gets better if he’s out,” UCLA Coach Steve Lavin said.

UCLA has suffered some of its worst losses to the Tar Heels.

In 1988-89, Jim Harrick’s first year, North Carolina beat UCLA, 104-78. In 1985-86, in the first game of Walt Hazzard’s second season, Carolina beat the Bruins, 107-70.

Update--Similar to their historic 48-point loss to Stanford last season, the Bruins have a quick turnaround after Thursday’s 41-point stinker against North Carolina in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout. UCLA is going to need better shooting from Toby Bailey (three of 11), Earl Watson (two for eight) and J.R. Henderson (five for 14) if it is going to score consistently.
