From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A man charged in Frederick with trying to sell his 15-month-old son for a used car and cash said he was only trying to give the boy “a better life.” Bill Gordon, who had been the boy’s foster father from when he was 5 weeks old until last summer, told authorities that Kenneth Mark Vogelpohl, 37, had offered to trade the boy for $5,000 and a car. Vogelpohl said he cannot work because of medical problems, and the boy’s mother, Julie Tilafian, doesn’t make much money. Maryland State Police interviewed her but did not charge her. Vogelpohl faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The child has been placed in the custody of Washington County Social Services.
