School Reform Efforts
* Re “Has Learning Been Forgotten in Rush to Reform,” Nov. 16.
I take umbrage at [Myron] Dembo’s inference that below-average LAUSD standardized test scores signal the failure of LEARN or other reform programs. What Dembo refers to as “the tired litany of possible solutions” is actually a tireless effort by educators, parents, administrators and students to impact every phase of the education process. It should be noted that LEARN gives our school the autonomy to create our own site action plan and determine what academic subject will be the focus of concentrated effort in the next two years. In other words, we’re looking at how our school scored on the tests and proactively attacking those areas of concern to us specifically.
Unlike Dembo, I do feel confident that our reform effort will have a long-term positive effect on learning and performance.
