Future Is Uncertain for School District Newspaper

The October issue of the Forum, a monthly newspaper for residents of the Orange Unified School District, may be the last unless trustees step in as publisher.

Susan Waldrip, the district parent who founded the Forum, told trustees last week that her role as publisher takes too much time away from her family.

Waldrip offered to continue reporting for the Forum, but suggested the district contract with a publishing company.

Trustee Maureen Aschoff said she would like to keep the paper alive but voiced concern about the profit-making enterprise. “In essence, we are subsidizing a private company, and that bothers me,” she said. Publishing the Forum would cost the district about $35,000 per year.

Trustees voted to pay for the October issue of the paper because it will cover the November election. The board will reconsider the Forum’s future at an upcoming meeting.
