Consolidated Edison Co. of New York Inc. filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against Rosemead-based Edison International, claiming that the electric utility had special rights to the Edison name, court papers showed. Con Edison said in its complaint, filed in U.S. District Court in New York, that with the deregulation of the electric utility business, Edison International’s use of the Edison name would confuse consumers who associate it with Con Edison. Edison International changed its name two years ago from SCECorp. Edison International Vice President for Corporate Communications Tom Higgins said the suit is “without merit.” Con Edison is seeking damages and an injunction to restrain Edison International from using the name. Con Edison officials were not immediately available for comment.
