A Huntington Beach woman captured a burglar fleeing her home Friday by grabbing the intruder’s ponytail.

The 50-year-old woman had left her home in the 9000 block of Tahiti Circle about 5:30 a.m. and noticed a young woman loitering in the area, Police Lt. Luis Ochoa said.

When the resident returned about 7 a.m., one of her screens was off the window, and inside was the woman she had spotted earlier, now ransacking her house, Ochoa said.

The burglar realized she had been spotted and ran out the front door with two bags of jewelry, compact discs and cosmetics, police said. The victim gave chase and grabbed the burglar’s ponytail when she caught up with her in the street, Ochoa said. Neighbors ran to help after hearing the victim shouting, and police arrived soon after.

Dori Ann Riggs, 23, of Westminster was booked into the Huntington Beach City Jail on suspicion of burglary. Bail was set at $25,000.
