Festival Celebrates Cambodian Art, Culture

Share

Nine months after a local congressman mused about joining the rich Cambodian culture in Long Beach with the middle-class culture of Downey, an exhibition of Cambodian art and culture has gone on display at the Downey Museum of Art.

“Wouldn’t it be great if Downey could learn more about the different people in my district?” Rep. Stephen Horn--a Republican who represents Long Beach, Downey, Lakewood and other cities--wondered aloud while attending a Cambodian community event in Long Beach.

The result is the Cambodian Arts and Culture Festival, featuring the arts, crafts, music, poetry, textiles, history and food of Cambodia. Most of the items on display are on loan from local collectors.

The museum is in Furman Park at 10419 Rives Ave. The exhibition will continue until Nov. 9. A series of events each Sunday includes folk dances, storytelling by Buddhist monks and a traditional Cambodian wedding ceremony.

Proceeds will benefit the museum and the Cambodian Women and Families Assn. For information, call (562) 861-0419.
