Shouldering the Bag

Share

To add to Dave Steiner’s letter (Aug. 10) regarding the rest room charge at Harrod’s department store in London: I would like to share my recent humiliation in that store.

My daughter and I entered the store neatly dressed--and I was carrying a tan, leather ($125) backpack over my shoulder as a shoulder bag. I was promptly told by a uniformed security person, in a very haughty manner, to “carry your rucksack in your hand.” I tried to explain I was carrying it as a shoulder bag but no luck.

I soon got tired of holding something meant to be on my shoulder in my hand and slipped it over my shoulder. Sure enough, I was again told to “carry the rucksack in your hand, madam!”

Out of Harrod’s we went and off to Fortnum-Mason to spend our pounds, be treated royally and use the facilities at no charge.
