Santa Rosa Church to Hold Health Fair

Share

Two local health care organizations will participate in the Santa Rosa Catholic Church’s seventh annual health fair Sunday.

The fair, which is free to the public, will include screenings and health services performed by volunteers from several local organizations. It is sponsored by the Providence Health System Latino Health Promoters and the San Fernando Valley Healthy Start Collaborative.

The health fair is organized to promote preventive health care, aid in the early detection of health problems and provide quality medical services at no cost to individuals and families who cannot afford annual medical checkups, organizers said.

“We’ve been doing it for seven years now and a lot of people look for the health fair because they use it as a primary source of care,” said Connie Cruz, coordinator of the Latino Health Promoters program at Providence.

“We really touch everything, and for some people it’s their only source of health care,” Cruz said.

Among the screenings and services to be offered are tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose, tuberculosis, vision, dental and hearing as well as mammograms, pap and pelvic exams, and body-fat measurement. Health workers will also distribute information about diabetes, nutrition and parenting, among other subjects.

Child immunizations will be offered and finger painting and other activities will be available for children while their parents are undergoing checkups.

The health fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church, 668 S. Workman Ave.
