Motorola Inc. reported higher third-quarter earnings of $266 million, or 44 cents a share, despite a $95-million pretax charge to exit the Macintosh computer-clone business. Earnings were above year-ago results of $206 million, or 34 cents a share. Excluding the previously announced charge, Motorola earned $328 million, or 54 cents, in line with estimates. . . . Lucent Technologies Inc. said it promoted President and Chief Operating Officer Richard McGinn to chief executive to succeed Henry Schacht.
