In The Mood / Cobblers and Crisps

Share

A cobbler is topped with a pie or biscuit dough crust, a crisp with crumbly streusel, but they’re both great ways to eat fruit year round:

* Cobbler Factory: This family-run business makes six cobblers (peach, apple, blackberry, blueberry, cherry and boysenberry) in five sizes: individual, two to three, six to eight, 10 to 12 and 30 people. All cobblers are honey-baked without sugar or preservatives. (Cobbler, $3.25 to $30; orders for six or more people must be placed 24 hours in advance.) Cobbler Factory, 33 N. Catalina Ave., Pasadena, (626) 449-2152.

* Shenandoah: The recipe for cobblers made at this comfortable Long Beach American restaurant comes from the owner’s Texas grandmother. Peach is a favorite summer flavor; blueberry and cherry show up year-round; all are great with a scoop of French vanilla bean ice cream. (Cobbler, $4.25; a la mode, $5.25.) Shenandoah Cafe, 4722 E. 2nd St., Long Beach, (562) 434-3469.

* 8:30 Cafe: Here is a sophisticated, modern soul food restaurant with a true Southern peach cobbler; it’s topped with flaky pie crust, not streusel. (Peach cobbler: individual servings, $3.95; a la mode, $4.95; whole cobbler for eight to 10 people, $9.30.) 8:30 Cafe, 36 E. Holly St., Pasadena, (626) 405-9492.

* Rix: At this spanking-new “New American” supper club, pastry chef Javier Franco offers up a seriously good crisp, although he calls it a cobbler. Made with white peaches and blueberries, it’s served warm and topped with vanilla bean ice cream. (Cobbler, $7.) Rix, 1413 5th St., Santa Monica, (310) 656-9688.

* Jozu: Chef Suzanne Tracht’s strawberry crisp is a classic: crunchy on top, wonderfully tart and juicy within. Served with vanilla ice cream. (Strawberry crisp, $6.) Jozu, 8360 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood, (213) 655-5600.

* Daily Grill: Cobblers--er, crisps--vary daily, according to the chef’s whim: apple, apple and peach, strawberry and peach, blueberry, blueberry and peach are only some of the variations we’ve seen. They’re all served warm with your choice of whipped cream or ice cream. (Daily cobbler, $4.95) Daily Grill, Brentwood Gardens, 11677 San Vicente Blvd., Brentwood, (310) 442-0044; Beverly Connection, 100 N. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, (310) 659-3100; Encino Place, 16101 Ventura Blvd., Encino, (818) 986-4111; 12050 Ventura Blvd., Studio City, (818) 769-6336.

* Cynthia’s: The blackberry cobbler here may be the most famous in town. Made fresh daily, it’s a huge portion that’s served with a minor mountain of Haagen Dazs melting on top. Customers endlessly debate whether to split one portion, and the cobbler’s journey from kitchen to table has been called “transfixing.” (Cobbler, $9.) Cynthia’s, 8370 W. 3rd St., Los Angeles, (213) 658-7851.
