Occupational Center Celebrates 30 Years of Helping Students

Share

The Southern California Regional Occupational Center in Torrance, the first in the state, on Wednesday celebrated its 30th anniversary and its success in preparing thousands of students for the working world.

The center opened its doors to the public to walk through the classrooms and view exhibits. Instructors fielded questions about the numerous programs that the job-training program offers.

The Torrance training program was founded in 1967 to prepare high school students for the transition from school to career and continuing education. When the occupational center opened, only seven subjects were offered; today, there are 72 such centers statewide offering over 60 different programs to more than 400,000 students annually.

Students enrolled in the local high school districts attend free classes in arts, communications, business, agriculture, health and technology; adults take part in the program for a minimal cost. Supt. Elizabeth Nash said students receive hands-on training that prepares them for employment and the opportunity to advance in their careers.
